As a self-proclaimed nerd, you’d think I’d have my finger on the pulse of every epic fan convention, especially one practically in my backyard. Nope! I was blissfully unaware of an out-of-this-world event until an Earptastic announcement lit up my Instagram feed last week. Brace yourselves, #Earpers: the one and only Melanie Scrofano, our beloved Wynonna Earp, is headed to Philadelphia for the 3rd annual Galactic Diversity & Inclusion Fan Convention, hosted by the fabulous 501(c)(3) nonprofit GAAAYS IN SPACE. Before we geek out over the guest list, let’s shine a spotlight on this incredible organization and its unique place in the fan convention universe.
The phrase “to boldly go…” is iconic, forever tied to the Star Trek legacy. For decades, this franchise—across its many incarnations—has beamed stories of exploration and humanity into living rooms worldwide. Strip away the sci-fi dazzle, and Star Trek’s core mission is clear: to push boundaries. Back in the 1960s, the original series broke ground with a moment that stopped hearts and raised eyebrows—a kiss between Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Lt. Uhura (Nichelle Nichols). Dubbed “the kiss heard around the world,” it was a daring spark of change, challenging norms and igniting conversations.
Fast forward sixty years, and the journey toward progress has been a turbulent one, with steps forward often followed by stumbles back. Yet, here we are—still boldly going, still dreaming of a more inclusive galaxy, thanks to events like this convention.
Without further ado, let’s warp into the stellar history of this one-of-a-kind convention! Launched in 2016, GAAAYS IN SPAAACE, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, blasted off with a mission to champion diversity and inclusion in the vast universe of science fiction—and entertainment as a whole. Their official mission statement says it best:
“GAAAYS IN SPAAACE (GIS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing diversity and inclusion in the worlds of both science fiction storytelling and the actual space industry. We are boldly going where no one has gone before, beyond inclusion. We work in conjunction with partners such as studios, actors, scientists, tech entrepreneurs and philanthropists to build a better and more hopeful future where universal equality has become a founding principle of our society. When working with allies and the general public, we strive to replace ignorance with knowledge and an empathetic understanding of the LGBTQIA+ experience. We strive to advance the hopeful vision of our future presented in popular franchises like STAR TREK & THE ORVILLE where universal equality has FINALLY become a reality.”
This vision took shape with the Galactic Diversity & Inclusion Fan Convention, now in its third year, creating a vibrant space in Philadelphia where fans of all backgrounds, identities, and fandoms unite to celebrate stories that inspire. From Star Trek’s trailblazing ethos to Wynonna Earp’s fierce heart, the convention honors sci-fi’s power to push boundaries and amplify underrepresented voices, making it a cornerstone of Philly’s fan scene.
And this year’s guest list? It’s a fandom-fueled supernova. Star Trek royalty beams in with Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine), Wilson Cruz (Discovery’s Dr. Culber), and Tim Russ (Tuvok from Voyager), bringing the Federation’s finest to Philly. Of course, #Earpers are losing their minds because Melanie Scrofano, our demon-slaying Wynonna Earp, will be there as well. But the fun doesn’t stop there!
