“A New Season aka Suck It Cancellation Bear” Review

Show stopping musical numbers, check. Witty lines and jokes that leave you in stitches laughingonthefloor (huge gulp of air), YES! The season premiere of ABC’s Galavant certainly did not disappoint. Why is it that every episode always seems to short and commercials so bloody long? Let’s get to the review, shall we?

A Real Ear Worm and One Wrong Turn:

We pick up where we left off with our dashing Galavant (Joshua Sasse) and “King” Richard (Timothy Omundson) sailing towards the latter’s kingdom. Apparently the sea does not agree with the-not-so-evil-king’s stomach and so he naturally turns to our hero for a musical distraction. Spoiler alert – the fourth wall gets completely caput. Oh, did I mention that they take a wrong turn and end up shipwrecked? Those pesky rock

Which Came First…The Chicken or the Egg?

Meanwhile back in Valencia, the-very-much-evil-Queen Madalena (Mallory Jansen), Gareth (Vinnie Jones), and Sid (Luke Youngblood) are, well the gentlemen are having difficulties adjusting to their new roles.  Growing pains ensue as the new power couple hash out a few décor details that ends with Sid being thrown out into the “toilet”.

Princess Isabella (Karen David) has clearly had enough of being held captive in her cousin’s kingdom – something that she strongly voices to her parents. After her daily “outing”, the princess conspires with Chef (Darren Evans) and Gwynee (Sophia McShera) a way to escape. This of course is after Isabella’s previous attempts to fly the coo.

A New Twist on the “Enchanted Forest”:offwith

Shipwrecked and forever banned from sailing, Galavant and Richard casually trek through an oddly familiar looking forest. It soon dawns upon the King that they had entered “the Enchanted Forest”; one in which he was warned by his father to avoid at all costs. On a side note, as a fan of Once Upon a Time, I had hoped to see the true “Evil Queen” roll up. Sadly, this forest is in England and the other one is in Canada. Ahem, so our unlikely heroic pair realizes that they are indeed in great peril…until we all learn that “The Enchanted Forest” is a pub. Kids – never ever trust a pub that just so happens to be in the middle of the forest. That OR going back to a castle in the middle of a torrential down pour because they might have a phone.

Hilarity quickly ensues as Galavant is put on a proper display whilst Richard is sadly side lined (why?).  After mixing a few drinks and earning the pub more money than they had in a long time; Galavant politely turns the fellas down and thanking them for not, “feeding us to Bear.”  Richard is blissfully unaware of the ‘type’ of pub they just so happened to crash in. Just before they can leave, the Queen (Kylie Minogue ) summons her guards and puts the boys to work.

Betrayal, A Friendly Unicorn, Medieval Skype, & The True King:

Richard soon finds his Uncle Keith (Simon Williams) who agrees to help the two escape and get on their quest. This of course requires the King to knock Galavant out cold and carry him to…the Ladies’ room? Given that this is primarily a “gentlemen’s club”, they never bothered to finish constructing it. Soon Galavant and Richard are off to reclaim a kingdom and rescue lady faire…respectfully. Along the way, a terrible medieval Skype call just so happens to get lost in translation. It shouldn’t come as a surprise because as a saying goes…” All magic comes at a price.”

Oh, and it would seem that Richard acquires a new friend – a unicorn – who is intent on following him no matter what. Said King also finds out that his “best friend” has betrayed him and taken over his throne. Ouch…poor fellow but at least he has one, if not two new friends. And there is also the small act of King Richard pulling a sword out of the…tree stump. Finders keepers.

The Future:

A missing castle, mixed messages, betrayal – this season is most certainly shaping up to one for the record books. I am very curious to see how things play out and who the one true ruler of all seven realms is. Who has your vote?

Watch Galavant Sunday’s on ABC at 8:00 PM EST.
